ATP Tour - Federer and Nadal through

World number one Roger Federer ended Ivo Karlovic's Masters Cup hopes beating the Croatian 6-3 4-6 6-3 to reach the third round of the Paris Masters.

The world number one, who had already been made to work by the 2.08-metre tall Karlovic for a 7-6 7-6 semi-final win in Basel on Saturday, had further problems against an opponent with an awkward style and a formidable serve.
The Swiss, certain to finish the season in top spot for the fourth consecutive year, broke in the sixth game of the first set and went on to take it with a forehand winner after 35 minutes.
Karlovic fought back in the second set, earning three set points in its 1Oth game. Federer saved two but hit a forehand long on the third.
An early break in the decisive set helped Federer regain control and he stayed on top until Karlovic, who fired 16 aces to bring his 2007 total to an amazing 1,318, bowed out by missing a drop shot on the first match point.
"It was not easy but I had a lot more opportunities than in Basel and I played well at times," Federer said.
His reward will be a meeting with another familiar face, David Nalbandian, the man who upset him in the final of the Madrid Masters earlier this month.
Argentine Nalbandian advanced with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Spain's Carlos Moya, the 14th seed in the $2.45 million indoor event.
"I'm looking forward to playing Nalbandian again," Federer said. "Facing him in the third round is easier than playing him in a final because he's always a lot more dangerous in finals."
Earlier on Wednesday, world number two Rafael Nadal recovered from a break down to outclass Italian Filippo Volandri 6-3 6-1.
The Spaniard, who is making his debut at the indoor hadrcourt event, set up a third-round match against Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.
"I didn't play my best tennis today, but I played a serious match," said Nadal, long qualified for the eight-man Masters Cup starting a week from Sunday in Shanghai.
"I didn't do anything special, I played a normal match and tried to get confidence. I want to get more feeling on the ball."
Russia's Nikolay Davydenko, meanwhile, overcame a sluggish start to move past Argentine qualifier Juan Martin Del Potro 7-6 6-1.
Davydenko, who won the tournament last year and is seeded fourth, will now face Cypriot Marcos Baghdatatis, who ended Ivan Ljubicic's Masters Cup hopes and boosted his own by beating the Croatian 6-4 7-6.
The Russian world number four Davydenko has already booked his ticket to Shanghai.
French number one Richard Gasquet, meanwhile, boosted his Masters Cup bid by fighting past compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5 7-6 (3). Gasquet will next play James Blake, who is also in with a very good chance of booking his place in Shanghai, after the American battled past Nicholas Mahut 6-7 7-6 6-1.
